New York, NY (July 22nd, 2008) – Christopher Denham’s directorial debut; HOME MOVIE, scares up critical reviews at the Montreal’s 2008 Fantasia Film Festival. Mitch Davis, the Festival Programmer, was overwhelmed by Christopher Denham’s film. " The atmosphere in the theater at both screenings was incredible - by the last act people were hanging on every word - and many are now calling it the standout experience of the festival. It's a tough, upsetting film, but it’s a rewarding one, and the way it played here perfectly illustrates how strongly it plays to crowds. I personally love this film and consider it to be one of 2008's key discoveries. Christopher Denham is an extraordinary new talent."
And the Canadian critics agreed. Al Kratina of The Montreal Gazette wrote, “…tense and harrowing… bringing together a visceral, realistic visual style with surreal imagery and the barest hint of the supernatural, HOME MOVIE is definitely one of the more powerful and enjoyably horrifying films at Fantasia this year.”. “…clever, insidious, deeply frightening slice o' reality horror…,” extolled John Griffin of The Montreal Gazette in his piece of the cornerstone films of the festival.
HOME MOVIE chronicles the Poe family's descent into darkness through a compilation of the family’s home-made video footage. In the remote woods of upstate New York, David (Adrian Pasdar) and Clare (Cady McClain) Poe are attempting to live a Norman Rockwell life - perfect marriage, perfect house. However, the Poe children are hiding a dark secret among themselves and something is dreadfully wrong with ten-year old twins, Jack (Austin William) and Emily (Amber Joy Williams) Poe. To stop them, their parents must enter the nightmare of their children’s minds. As they attempt to regain control of their children’s lives the imperative question becomes who will ultimately survive the struggle.
Critically acclaimed filmmaker Larry Fessenden (Wendigo & The Last Winter) felt HOME MOVIE is “a slow-burn of a movie, exceptionally beautiful, crafted, and assured for a handy-cam feature. It gets under your skin. Creepy as hell.” Author Jack Ketchum (The Lost & The Girl Next Door) was so impressed by HOME MOVIE he felt it “genuinely creepy and original, with a wacky edge and a literate sensibility. What The Blair Witch Project might have been if it had a brain, a script, technique, and actors that are as good as these!” And Michael Gingold of Fangoria Magazine said of HOME MOVIE, “…a damn disturbing and effective little tale of extreme family dysfunction,”
Following the final festival screening several bids were made on the film and IFC Entertainment acquired US rights for IFC's Festival Direct Video On Demand and DVD rights Nationwide. "In the tradition of great horror films, Christopher Denham's HOME MOVIE will keep you on the edge of your seat," said Jonathan Sehring, President of IFC Entertainment. "Festival Direct will give a nationwide audience the opportunity to experience the terror straight from their living rooms."
Hot on the heels IFC Entertainment, Anchor Bay Entertainment acquired the Canadian DVD rights to the film. “HOME MOVIE is one of the most twisted, disturbing descents into madness that we have seen in a long time. We are proud to represent this film in Canada, and look forward to the other mind twisting films that MODERNCINÉ will produce in the near future,” explained Robert Herholz, Director of Acquisitions for Anchor Bay Entertainment.
Chicago native, Christopher Denham first came to the attention of audiences for his work in the theater. On stage, Denham appeared on Broadway with Danny Glover in the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Master Harold and The Boys” and in Martin McDonagh’s “The Lieutenant of Inishmore.” His Off-Broadway credits include “Wintertime” and Adam Rapp’s “Red Light Winter,” for which Denham won a Lucille Lortel Award. Denham’s television credits include “Law & Order” and Fox’s pilot “Two Families.” In independent films, in 2007, Chris starred in “Bottleworld” and “El Camino.” On the big screen Denham was featured in Mike Nichols’ “Charlie Wilson’s War” opposite Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman for Universal. He is currently shooting two films: Martin Scorsese’s “Ashcliffe,” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tony Gilroy’s “Duplicity” with Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Tom Wilkinson, both to be released in early 2009.
MODERNCINÉ (www.moderncine.com) is dedicated to making high-quality films by telling stories that are edgy and groundbreaking. Our only limit is to avoid clichés and complacency in favor of original ideas and memorable performances. MODERNCINÉ was founded in 2001 by Andrew van den Houten. In 2005, Andrew directed “Headspace,” their first full-length feature, an official selection of the Brussels International Fantasy Film Festival, a multiple award-winner at the New York City Horror Film Festival, and winner of the "Best Monster Movie" at the World Horror Convention in San Francisco. Headspace is available nationwide on DVD at all major retailers and is now showing on Showtime Channel and Starz/Encore. They are currently in post-production on "Made For Each Other", starring Christopher Masterson and Bijou Phillips, also starring Danny Masterson, Lauren German, and Samm Levine with George Segal and Patrick Warburton.
FESTIVAL DIRECT features a wide selection IFC Films that have premiered at major international film festivals including Cannes, Toronto, Tribeca, Venice and Telluride that are available on local cable's On Demand platform. This initiative reinforces IFC Entertainment's commitment to give broad exposure to the many critically acclaimed independent films that are screened at film festivals each year but are lost within the marketplace, never reaching a wider audience.
