From Friday, June 1 through Thursday, June 7, BAMcinématek presents Tangerine Dreams, a 10-film series dedicated to the legendary German ambient group. Over 40 years and a lot more albums, Tangerine Dream composed more than 30 film scores, starting in 1977 with William Friedkin’s Sorcerer. To celebrate the group’s US tour this July, BAMcinématek presents a week-long series of films featuring Tangerine Dream’s cosmic, ethereal, moving, and often contrapuntal scores, from 1981’s Thief, by Michael Mann, to 1988’s Reagan-era apocalypse vision Miracle Mile, by Steve De Jarnatt.
As a special bonus, the series features three films scored with what Tangerine Dream founder Edgar Froese dubbed kosmiche musik, including the North American premiere of Philippe Garrel’s Le berceau de cristal (The Crystal Cradle, 1975—Jun 6), with music by Ash Ra Tempel, and Douglas Trumbull’s cult sci-fi debut, Silent Running (1972—Jun 7), an inspiration for Klaus Schulze of Ash Ra Tempel and Tangerine Dream. Silent Running will screen with the short that partially influenced it, Rolf Forsberg’s Ark (1970).
